Privacy Policy
The short version: Study Rewards does not collect your personal information. There are no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and I run no servers that your data goes to. What you record stays on your devices and in your own iCloud account, where I cannot see it.
Who this policy is from
Study Rewards is made by Jason Wood, an individual developer in Australia ("I", "me"). This policy covers the Study Rewards app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, and this website.
As an individual developer who earns nothing from the app, I may not be required to follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). I have written this policy to follow them anyway.
Questions, requests and complaints: privacy@mandj.net.
What the app stores, and where
To work, the app keeps:
- your study sessions: when they started and stopped, how long they ran, and the subject and note you gave them, if any;
- the subjects you set up;
- the rewards you create: name, points needed, and a photo if you add one;
- the rewards you have redeemed, and when;
- your settings.
This information is kept on your device. If you are signed in to iCloud, it is also synced to your own private iCloud storage through Apple's CloudKit service, so your other devices can show the same data. That storage belongs to your iCloud account. I have no access to it, and Apple handles it under Apple's Privacy Policy. Apple may store iCloud data in data centres outside Australia.
Your points total is worked out from your sessions and redemptions on your device. It is not sent anywhere.
Apple Watch
The watch app sends study sessions and timer commands directly to your iPhone using Apple's watch connection. Nothing goes to me.
Camera and photos
The app asks for access to your camera or photo library only when you choose to add a photo to a reward. Only the photo you take or pick is used, and it is stored with that reward as described above. The app does not look at the rest of your photo library.
Notifications
"Still studying?" reminders and weekly summaries are created on your device. Friends alerts are triggered by Apple's push notification service when a group you belong to changes. Their wording is worked out on your device. No notification content passes through me.
Friends leaderboard (optional)
If you create or join a friends group, the app shares a small amount of information with the other members of that group, through Apple's iCloud sharing:
- the nickname you choose;
- your study minutes for this week, this month and all time, and your daily totals for this week.
The app does not share your sessions, subjects, notes, rewards, photos, points or redemptions.
Please keep in mind:
- Anyone who has a group's invitation link can join it until the group's owner locks it. Only share links with people you know.
- The group name appears in the link's preview, so anyone who sees the link sees the name.
- Depending on your iCloud settings, Apple may show a group's owner the name on a member's iCloud account.
- Choose a nickname that is not your full name.
The group is stored in the owner's iCloud account and shared with members by Apple. I do not receive or see any of it. You can leave a group at any time, which removes your standing from it. A group's owner can remove members or delete the group.
What I do receive
The only information that can reach me comes through Apple or from you directly:
- Crash reports and usage statistics. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), Apple sends me crash reports and aggregated statistics, such as how many people use the app. These do not identify you. I use them only to fix problems. You can turn this off at any time in the same place.
- App Store figures. Apple shows me totals such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Reviews are public and shown under the name you choose in the App Store.
- Beta testing. If you test the app through TestFlight, Apple shows me the name and email address you were invited with, and any feedback, screenshots or crash reports you choose to send. I use these only to run the beta and fix problems.
- Email. If you email me, I receive your email address and what you write. I use it only to reply, and I delete it when it is no longer needed.
I do not sell, rent or share any information with anyone, and I do not use it for advertising or marketing.
Children
Study Rewards is designed for students, including children. It has no advertising, no in-app purchases, no tracking and no links to social media. The only feature that involves other people is the optional friends leaderboard, described above. Parents may want to set it up with their child, choose the nickname together and keep an eye on who has the group's link.
Because I do not collect information about the people who use the app, I do not know any user's age or identity.
Access, correction and deletion
Everything the app stores is in your control:
- You can see, edit and delete your sessions, subjects, rewards and redemptions in the app.
- To remove everything, leave or delete any friends groups first, then delete the app from your devices and delete its iCloud data in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage (the exact wording varies between iOS versions).
If you have emailed me and want a copy of what I hold, a correction, or for it to be deleted, write to privacy@mandj.net. There is no charge.
Security
Your data is protected by your device's security and by Apple's iCloud security. See Apple's iCloud data security overview for details. Because I hold no copy of your data, there is no database of mine that could be breached.
This website
This website has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. It is hosted on Amazon Web Services, which handles technical information such as your IP address to deliver the pages. I do not keep access logs.
Complaints
If you have a concern about how your information is handled, please email privacy@mandj.net. I will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with my response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new "last updated" date. If a change affects what the app shares or who can see it, I will also mention it in the app's release notes.
